The Nike Air VaporMax, first introduced in 2017, marked a radical departure from Nike's traditional cushioning setup by ditching the foam midsole entirely in favor of a full-length Air unit visible from every angle. The 2021 Flyknit iteration continued that lineage, refining the silhouette rather than reinventing it. By this point, the VaporMax had gone through several revisions since its debut, including the VaporMax Plus and various Flyknit updates, each tweaking the upper construction and the segmented sole pattern that gave the shoe its bouncy, almost gel-like appearance underfoot. The 2021 FK version leaned into a more streamlined Flyknit upper, offering a snugger, sock-like fit compared to earlier VaporMax models, while retaining the exposed Air pods that had become the shoe's signature visual hook. Regarded by many sneakerheads as a lifestyle-first release rather than a performance runner, it found its footing more in street style than on the track. Retail pricing stayed in line with previous VaporMax drops, and colorways ranged from subdued neutrals to bolder multicolor Flyknit blends, keeping the model relevant within Nike's ongoing push to modernize its Air technology for a generation raised on visible-cushioning hype.
