The Nike Air Max 95, designed by Sergio Lozano and released in 1995, broke from the brand's earlier Air Max lineage by looking to human anatomy rather than sportswear conventions for inspiration. The layered mesh and synthetic panels were meant to echo muscle striations, while the gradient color-blocking, running darker at the top and lighter toward the sole, was designed to evoke a spine. It was also the first Air Max model to feature visible Air units in both the heel and forefoot, a genuine engineering step forward at the time and a detail that became a signature. Initially a divisive release, the 95 found its footing in the UK, where it became closely tied to the rave and garage scene, and later exploded again during the "Air Max Day" resurgence of the mid-2000s hype culture, particularly in London. Its "Neon" colorway, with that acid-green swoosh, remains the most referenced version and is often treated as the model's defining look. Over the years the silhouette has cycled through waves of retro drops and collaborations, cementing its status as one of the more technically distinct entries in the Air Max family.
