The Nike Air Force 1 Sage Low emerged in 2018 as the brand's answer to the chunky, dad-shoe wave that Balenciaga's Triple S had kicked off in streetwear circles. Rather than reissuing the classic 1982 basketball silhouette outright, Nike's design team stacked the AF1's DNA onto an exaggerated platform sole, doubling the stack height while keeping the leather upper, perforated toe box, and Swoosh proportions recognizable. The result read as a distorted, almost bootleg version of the original, which was very much the point in an era obsessed with ugly-chic footwear. Marketed initially toward women, the Sage Low quickly crossed gender lines as sneakerheads embraced its exaggerated silhouette for its sheer novelty. Colorways ranged from clean white-on-white pairs to bold, multi-panel mixes that leaned into the "extra" aesthetic driving the platform trend.
